For Harvard professor Juliette Kayyem, coping with disasters, planning ahead is a way of life

Harvard professor and crisis management expert Juliette Kayyem spoke Thursday at Temple Beit HaYam in Stuart, discussing pandemics, climate disasters and homeland security as part of the Rappaport Speaker Series. Drawing from her book “The Devil Never Sleeps,” she emphasized a “fail safer” philosophy, arguing that success in disasters means reducing harm the next time rather than preventing all risk. Kayyem also expressed concern about growing vaccine skepticism and stressed the need to balance risks in an increasingly disruption-prone world.
